For many, Arecibo was more than the worlds second-largest radio telescope and a key instrument in our efforts to probe the cosmos and canvas the universe for. The telescope consisted of a 1,000-foot-wide radio dish below a suspended 900-ton instrument platform, which was what collapsed Tuesday after being suspended 450 feet in the air by cables connected to three towers. The observatory was also involved in the search for extraterrestrial life. In December of 2020, the Arecibo telescope - one of the largest and most iconic astronomical instruments in the world - collapsed. Key BackgroundĪrecibo had been involved in a vast array of scientific research throughout its 57-year history, including helping to discover the first binary pulsar star, which led to a Nobel Prize, and the first exoplanets that lie beyond the Solar System. The Arecibo Observatory (AO) hosted the most powerful radar system and the most sensitive radio telescope in the world until the unexpected collapse of the 1000. The NSF announced at the time that some operations at the observatory would reopen, including its visitor center and some offsite research and data analysis, and it is currently unknown whether those activities will be impacted by the collapse. The instrument platform of the 305-meter telescope at Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico collapsed overnight, according to the National Science Foundation.
